Philip Withnall

I work full time in the Hive, writing software for Endless Mobile. We produce an operating system which can be used offline, and is aimed at educating kids and others in various countries. I’ve lived in Lancaster for a couple of years, having moved here to enjoy the hills and the outdoors. I enjoy running and walking in the hills, and getting out for the occasional bike ride around Bowland and the Lune valley.

We asked Phil 5 ‘just for fun’ questions, and here’s what he had to say:

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things could you not live without?
A good book, because being on a desert island would be a great opportunity to catch up with reading. At the moment I’m slowly making my way through the Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. A supply of tea bags, to stave off caffeine withdrawal. And a boat, so that I could leave when I was done.

Do you believe in ghosts?

I don’t believe in ghosts because there’s no reputable evidence for them. Despite that, going running in the dark is still spooky — the brain is a funny thing!

Name your all time favourite film?
Let’s say any of the Star Wars films, because they don’t take themselves too seriously, there’s explosions and interesting planets and civilisations and sword fights.

What is your proudest achievement?

Researching, designing and building an MVHR system for my house. It was interesting reading up on them, and then putting the theory into practice and filling my loft with ducting!

Marmite- love it or hate?

I’m actually on the fence about Marmite. I wouldn’t have it as the only filling in a sandwich, but it is good with a load of butter on toast every so often. Is that allowed??

Next month we will meet Susan Crawford, Susan Crawford Vintage
